Job Summary:
Under immediate supervision performs work according to established policies and procedures in operating data processing equipment. This is technical work involved in operating the equipment utilized in a computer system. An employee in this position performs technical duties in operating a variety of computer and peripheral equipment used in electronic computer systems. The work involves preparing equipment for operation, obtaining, loading and unloading magnetic tapes, disks, punch cards, paper and mass storage components; removing and preparing output for distribution; keeping required records; monitoring machine operation; and performing routine maintenance operations on all equipment. Duties are performed under the supervision of a supervisor or lead worker who reviews work for accuracy and adherence to schedules.
Essential Functions:
- Operates magnetic tape and disk equipment, printers, mass storage equipment, optical scanners, visual display equipment and other peripheral equipment used in a computer operation.
- Prepares equipment for operation; obtains, loads and unloads magnetic tapes, disks, paper and mass storage devices; and monitors machine operations.
- Operates computers during routine production or conversion runs.
- Removes and prepares output for distribution, assists in maintaining required records and performs routine maintenance operations on equipment.
- Participates in formal and on-the-job training.
Qualifications:
- Some knowledge of the operation, care and adjustment of computer peripheral equipment.
- Some knowledge of general electronic data processing principles.
- Some knowledge of computer operating techniques.
- Ability to think logically, to comprehend complex data processing system requirements and programming principles and to apply these principles to the operation of a computer.
- Ability to work quickly under pressure, to make decisions and in order to meet deadlines.
- Ability to make minor adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures.
- Ability to write reports and routine business correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
